Three years ago, Bournemouth Clean Freaks was just me, a bucket, a mop, and a determination to rebuild my life.
I'd recently left a toxic relationship, fallen on hard times, and quite literally didn't have a penny to my name. As a single mum with three children to support, I needed a way to earn money and create a better future for us all.
I've always loved cleaning. With no formal qualifications and a passion for transforming homes, cleaning was the first thing that came to mind. What started as a way to make ends meet quickly snowballed into something far bigger and better than I ever could have imagined.
Before long, the demand got so intense that I needed help. And that's when I met the wonderful Shannai — my very first member of staff, who will always hold such a special place in my heart. Expanding had its doubters — I still remember one client telling me I should stay on my own, and another complaining about a bathroom she'd cleaned. But I knew I was onto something special, followed my gut and kept her on. We continued training, where I taught her all my little tricks of the trade, and today she's one of the most valued members of our team. Our clients absolutely love her.
But we kept growing, and our little team then grew to include Mary Ellen. She kept asking me for a job when I wasn't even looking for more staff, but eventually her persistence won me over. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. She's still with us today, and honestly, I'd be lost without her.
The truth is, I only keep people who genuinely care. People who are dedicated to the team, take pride in their work, and actually enjoy cleaning. I'll never understand cleaners who complain about cleaning tasks — after all, that's exactly what we do! We love the good, the bad, and the ugly. Whether it's a quick refresh, a deep clean, or tackling the jobs nobody else wants to touch, we're here for it.
As much as the business has grown, one thing hasn't changed. I'm still a hands-on owner. You'll often find me out cleaning alongside the team rather than sat behind a desk, and that's because I genuinely love what I do. And that love and passion is what feeds this business.
Being a mum to three children, who I raise largely on my own, keeps me motivated every day. Everything I do is to give them the best life possible and show them what hard work, determination, and resilience can achieve.
People often say we're helping our clients, and we absolutely are. But the truth is, this business has helped me too. There is something incredibly satisfying about putting on a pair of gloves, turning up the music, getting stuck in, and transforming a home.
What started as survival has become something I'm incredibly proud of.
